Emotional labor is simply what it implies it can be defined as the type of emotion expected of while at work. It is the control your ones feelings in order to fulfill the goals and expectations of ones organization. Simply what this means that that either you go to work expressing your positive feelings or go to work and hide and/ or manage your negative feelings. In order for someone to deal with negative emotional, most people will do one of the followings which is:  show emotion they do not really feel, hide emotion they really do feel, or make or create an appropriate emotion for the situation.  There are two emotional labor techniques that a person can use. The first one is called surface acting and what this basically means is that you “fake” or pretend your emotions. With is you use an artificial body language and verbal communication. Examples would be to smile while using a soft tone voice to somewhat show emotions you that you doing really feel. The other emotional labor technique is the deep acting and with this technique you basically control your internal emotions and making them believe that you really are delighted and liking the interactions that you are having with the person or customer (Mind Tools, n.d.)

There are several situations where emotional labor is required for instructors at colleges and universities. One situation could be where a professor is instructing and a student is disturbing the class. Some professors may want to do something inappropriate like yell at the student or kick them out but they must remain professional and ask the student nicely to either be quiet or simply just ignore them. Another situation could be if a student was to ask a question to where a professor just does not know the answer and does not know to respond. Everyone also has their bad days and I am sure professors included to. There may be days where professors are not in the mood to teach or are having some personal issues but they still have to come to work (Brenna, 2006). They still have to come to hide their emotion and pretend that nothing bad has happened, putting a smile and going on with work.

To answer the question “is emotional labor more troublesome for college instructors or for telephone operators working at an emergency service?”  In my opinion, I think they are both equal. It is hard for the instructors because you have an audience right in your face. With a presence of an audience your emotions are visible for all to see. For the telephone operator working at an emergency service although their emotions are not seen, the sound of their voice is really important. There could be a really nice person that loves their job at the emergency service but if the tone of their voice is not right then it could be really hard for the person on the other line. Therefore I would go with both.
