Performance appraisal helps employees to learn self-development.  This is made possible because the performance document helps in keeping track of what has improved and what needs to be improved. Through this way, an employee tends to look for ways in which he or she can improve their weaknesses while strengthening their strong points hence promoting motivation (Blokdyk, 2018, p. 50). By motivating themselves to work harder and also improve themselves employees look forward to the compensation scheme that the organization might have for well-performed staff.
Productivity and Performance
Performance appraisal also serves to identify and acknowledge the performance rates of employees. Performance and efficient product production go hand in hand therefore an appraisal is meant to ensure that productivity in the organization does not go below the required standard (Blokdyk, 2018, p. 53). It is also an easy way of identifying employees that do not fit the set performance standard placed by the management.
Important Points
Some of the key points to keep in mind while performing or ready to perform a performance appraisal include being honest to the employees, providing feedback to the employees, develop a plan to improve how performance rates in the organization can improve (Heidari-Robinson & Heywood, 2016, p. 120). It is also important to remember that avoiding past events that have happened in the organization among the staff is important because humans being are not static creatures and that change is a required process.

Activities or practices that I have experienced during a performance appraisal exercise is that the management did not view the process as an annual activity but a continuous one aimed at helping its employees. The other practice was linking personal employee goals with organizational objectives (Heidari-Robinson & Heywood, 2016, p. 148). A practice that I would like to change is one in which the staff is not made to participate and be a part of the appraisal process. Promoting employee performance can help improve clarity between management and employees.
Conclusion
In conclusion, performance appraisal helps employees to learn self-development.  Things to remember during performance appraisal be honest, design ways to ensure employee improvement among others. The best practice is linking employee goals with organizational objectives.
