2.Final Essay Topic:
In a well focused, well organized and well supported 8-10 page essay double spaced and stapled, choose an aspect of the image of the physician and/or the patient physician relationship that has emerged from our readings. Use 5 outside sources to give context to your claims or interpretations. The more material from the course that you use, the richer, stronger your essay will be.
Look at the general criteria for essay grades at the beginning of your syllabus. For those more cofortable with a numerical division the numbers are distribute as follows:
55% for content including strength of ain idea/thesis statement
20% for quality of outside sources used and their effective integration within your essay.
15% for quality of writing including sentence structure and and grammar
!0% for overall cohesiveness
1.As I said in class your final essay should focus on the image of the physician that emerges from the material we have covered that you have not already written about, unless you received a poor grade on one of those essays and would like to include a revised discussion in your final essay. So, no need to write about ‘”Wit” or ‘The Knife.”
2. You can use outside sources to add another dimension to this image or to deepen the analysis you already are developing.
3. Look at the syllabus for writing guidelines and the previous blackboard for a more precise breakdown of the grade.
4. Since almost all of you have taken 101, 102 and 103 of the FWP, I assume you are clear about the basics of effecive analytical writing. Nevertheless, here are some refreshers:
1. Best to begin by brainstorming. YOUR own mind is your first resource.
a.You can brainstorm each of the works you plan to discuss to see what thesis statement that appeals to you emerges from them and then link those that seem to convey similar themes, so that you might group them together.
b.At the same time, you need to give specific evidence, from each piece to support your caims. Brainstorming this aspect of the essay, ie developing support, also can be helpful .
c. Among the guideline questions for generating your ideas for this essya could be, ” What the role of the physician, challenges to the physician, effective or ineffective approaches of the physician does any given piece you are considering develop?
d. You also might want to brainstorm a tentative thesis statement and then figure out what you want to use as support.
e. AS with any other discipline, you need to integrate the points you have gleened from outside sources within your essay according to MLA stylesheet and then again format the bibliography at the conclusion of your essay according to the MLA format. Only material you have referenced within theessay belong on the bibliography . the primary material we have looked at is NOT part of the ” outside sources. ”
f. Feel free to start your essay with an anecdote from the material, one from an outside source, or one that you have made up or actually expereinced . That can be a very effective way of engaging the reader. Other possibilities include starting with some misconceptions that your analysis will refute , otr a traightforward introductory paragraph that announces your thesis and how you will develop.
g. The concluding paragraph is most effective when it comes to some conclusion, about the these(s) you have been developing, ie when it articulates the implications of what you have been discussing.
