Assignments Instructions Assignment 1, Field research and analysis of observations. Individual work. you are going to conduct a minor fieldwork based on participant observations. Instructions for fieldwork (step 1): 1. Choose a setting that you are curious about and formulate a research question that would be possible to study through participant observations in the chosen setting. 2. You will have to follow the routines for any fieldwork, first planning and making contacts in order to get access to the field. When you have access to the field and to those who you want to observe, you have to plan how much time to spend at the place and how to document your observations through field notes. 3. After finishing the observations, your field experiences and field notes will be used as the point of departure for your assignment – to write an ethnographic analysis. Instructions for assignment and examination (step2): Your shall write an individual paper with an ethnographic analysis based on your research question, observations and analysis of the collected material (we will work with analysis and writing at lectures and seminars during the course).In the paper you should also support your analysis and arguments by referring to relevant literature and reflect on methodological, ethical and theoretical aspects. In the paper the mandatory literature is to be used and the objects of the course should be taken account to. (Observe that you will also work with your field notes when we discuss and work with coding procedures). The written paper should be 5-8 pages, Times new roman, 12 p, double space, use a scientific reference system (Author, Year, Page). Criteria used in assessment of assignment 1: The assessment is based on the following criteria: 1. That the aims of the course are fulfilled Identify how and with which theoretical and methodological tools ethnographic research may be conducted Apply ethnographic methods in field research and conduct analysis of empirical material Assess and judge ethical aspects in ethnographic research Critically reflect on research based on qualitative methods 2.
