Write a 2000 word essay in response to a credible outside source (e.g. a recent editorial, news article, podcast or documentary) related to one of the course topics of your choice. (The article CANNOT be one of the assigned readings or any videos or articles we presented during class sessions. However, it may be one of the readings labelled “Optional Reading for Term Paper” on the syllabus.) This essay should be a sustained engagement with a single topic, rather than just a summary of someone else’s ideas or a set of disconnected thoughts. Nevertheless, you may choose to write a blog post, a (simulated) interview with an author, a letter to the editor or author, a petition or grant, or a (mock) crowd-sourced funding description, etc. This assignment is a completion grade. In all cases, you must submit a text document of your writing to TRACS. The point is to let you explore a topic of your choice in a medium of your choice without worrying about your grade on the assignment. Writing can be a joy, and my hope is that this assignment can help you discover that joy for yourself.
